Secularism is a Women’s Issue

This lecture explores the relationship between women’s rights and religion in contemporary history. The title echoes the electronic newsletter, Secularism is a Women’s Issue (known as SIAWI), founded and edited by Marieme Helie-Lucas. This talk was written for the George Rude Society Conference on French History organized to take place in Auckland New Zealand in July 2020. COVID 19 pushed this international conference, co-sponsored by the Society for French Historical Studies, online.

  1. Hi Alice, this is an excellent talk. Bravo, all power to you for taking on the fashionable Joan Scott. But its odd that you dont credit the main title of your paper as also the name of the website run by Marieme. This is not about copyright and ownership by recognition matters
    greetings

    1. Dear Harsh,
Thank-you for your comment & interest!
This talk is explicitly named in an echo of the work of Mariem Helie-Lucas, so you are absolutely correct.
I will add the acknowledgement into the typed introduction. Actually, previously in the video I said the title
of the talk was an echo of Helie-Lucas’ electronic newsletter, but time-constraints
meant that sentence was edited out. Of course, the talk does already mention Helie-Lucas founded & runs the Secularism is a Woman’s Issue Electronic Newsletter (SIAWI) along with Women Living Under Muslim Laws. SIAWI is a carefully curated daily, highly recommended!

      Alice

  2. I’d like to receive this newsletter and mention it on my blog, but am unsure how to refer folks to this blog. “Secularism” doesn’t represent the entire newsletter does it? Whatr is the link for everything? I certainly support out cause.
